This scene is without a doubt the greatest moment I experienced in nature. Not only from a photography point of view, but also from a general point of view experiencing the power of the natural elements.
We were on an afternoon drive driving towards where we last see the famous male lion SCAR and his sibling. The skies were dark and moody.
We found them slightly in the open, lying down. Resting on the banks of the Mara River. Little did we know that nature would unleash her thunderous clouds upon us.
Without warning, one of the strongest gusts and hail came down on us, crashing down like comets from the sky, visible as white spots on the photograph. The rain made it impossible to see outside, the wind rocking our vehicle side to side. Hail thundered down and the sound was unbelievable. Rain washed through the open windows and roof. After closing the roof, I saw SCAR standing and running for cover. I decided to open the window and photograph him as he is running in the hail/rain. I picked up my camera and my wider angle Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 and fired away as the storm drenched me and my equipment. I managed to get only a few photographs, as the heavy rain and a sudden darkening of overall light conditions made it very difficult to do initial focus on the lion. With everything wet, I glanced at the pictures on the back of my Canon 5D III…
I was very happy with the result. It was a moment in time of chaos. Rain streaks, hail and a frantic run for cover. The
